The demo group Mercury has presented a stunning piece, “The Timeless”, for the Revision 2014 Demo Party in Saarbrücken, Germany.

I used to be an avid follower of the demoscene back in my Commodore Amiga and Atari ST days, but haven’t really paid much attention for the past ten or so years. Watching “The Timeless” has made me wonder what I’ve been missing.

This visually stunning feast — reminiscent of the movie, “Inception” — is unbelievably produced by just 64‍KB of code. To put that into perspective, the image above weighs in at 94‍KB!

If you’re on a Windows PC, or have a Windows VM, the demo is available for download from Pouet. Otherwise you can watch the demo on YouTube.1

  1. There was a time when I wouldn’t be able to enjoy a demo written for a different model of computer than my own. The ubiquity of YouTube and Vimeo resolves that issue. Now everyone can enjoy every demo, without having to download any (potentially virus-ridden) software nor having to configure graphics and sound cards. You kids today… don’t know how lucky you are! ↩︎
